Oakton Otters Dive into Victory for Third Consecutive Year

The Oakton Otters Dive Team has once again made a splash, securing their third consecutive Division 1 championship title in the Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL). This year’s victory was a nail-biter, with the top three teams – Donaldson Run, Vienna Woods, and Oakton – going head-to-head in an intense final showdown.

In a dramatic showdown, Donaldson Run and Vienna Woods tied in their final meet, leaving the door open for Oakton to clinch the championship. The Otters rose to the challenge, delivering a commanding 50-22 victory over Fairfax. Every Otter diver contributed to this triumphant season, with a few standout performances deserving special recognitions.

Sophia Blanco captured first place in the Freshman Girls division, becoming the second-highest scorer for the team. Other notable performances included Quinn McManus and Chloe Sanglier in the same category. In the Freshman Boys, Gabe Wilson took first, and Graham Smith claimed third. Simone Wilson and Lauren Emerick dominated the Junior Girls, securing first and second place, respectively. Brayden Lane followed suit with a third-place finish in Junior Boys. The Intermediate Girls division saw another Otter victory, with Charlotte and Ella Henderson placing first and third. The Intermediate Boys swept the competition, with Caleb McManus in first, Connor Timm in second, and newcomer Alex Negron in third. Isabelle Whang continued her reign as the team’s top scorer, winning the Senior Girls division. The Senior Boys also swept their category, with Brendan Doe, Thibault Lede, and Jon Anthony Montel taking the top three spots.

The Otters’ success is a testament to not only the incredible talent of the divers but also the exceptional coaching staff. Head Coach Ken Hansen, with 13 years of dedicated service, has been instrumental in building the team’s winning culture. Cheryl Kroopnick, Developmental and Clinic Head Coach and Oakton High School Head Coach, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team. Assistant Head Coach Katie Vaughan and Senior Assistant Coach Sophie Whang have also made significant contributions to the Otters’ success. This year, the team introduced a Junior Assistant Coach program, mentoring young divers who have demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership qualities.

The Otters’ winning streak extends beyond the NVSL. Sixteen divers competed in the Divisionals Championship last Saturday, and six qualified for the All-Stars Championship on July 28th.

The Oakton Otters Dive Team has proven once again that they are the force to be reckoned with in Division 1. Their dedication, hard work, and exceptional talent have solidified their position as champions.
