Announcer
Announces each diver, the dive, and the degree of difficulty (all provided on the diver meet sheet), and calls the scores shown by the judges. The Announcer is important for meet management and control. He/she announces the diver and his/her dive and lastly announces the scores from the judges in a particular and consistent order. The announcer must be aware of cues from the referee related to deductions for dives, be aware of when a dive is disqualified, resulting in a “Thank you diver,” and keeping the ultimate flow of the meet moving. After each event, the Announcer will also share the top three divers and their related scores.
The Announcer sets the atmosphere and controls the tempo of the meet. Additionally, the announcer should have a good understanding of dive numbers, a quick-paced delivery, and an unbiased patience.
Requirements: Previous dive meet volunteer experience recommended.
Time commitment: Duration of home meets.
Table Workers
A table worker is either a scorekeeper or a calculator. Dual meets require 2 scorekeepers and 2 calculators between the teams.
- The scorekeepers write down the judges’ scores as announced. They eliminate the lowest and highest score and total the remaining 3 scores onto the diver meet sheet. The scorekeepers then compare their scores and resolve any discrepancies before passing the diver meet sheet to the calculators.
- The calculators multiply the total score by the degree of difficulty (as indicated on the diver meet sheet) to determine the total points awarded for the dive, keep a running overall score for the diver, and compare calculations as a check to help ensure accuracy.
Working the table requires the math skills of a third grader, but you have the benefit of a calculator.
Requirements: This is a great role for those new to diving. NVSL offers free Table Worker Clinics at the beginning of the season. Attendance to these clinics is recommended, but not required.
Time commitment: Duration of the meet.
Meet Secretary
Prepares a list of the competitors from both teams and organizes the meet sheets in order to hand to the announcer. Meet Secretary also reviews the scores and the points awarded for each diver to determine the winner/place order for each event, as well as the points awarded to the teams. Additionally, he/she records and tallies the scores of the meet in the official NVSL Meet Sheets and works with the Data Entry Coordinator to make sure he/she has access to the information in a timely manner after each event. The Meet Secretary also works with Ribbon Writer to prepare the ribbons for all meet participants.
Requirements: This position requires prior experience working as a table worker.
Time commitment: Home meets for the duration of meet.
Assistant Meet Secretary / Ribbon Writer
The Assistant Meet Secretary / Ribbon Writer will shadow the meet secretary at all home meets, collects the final age group dive sheets from the Meet Secretary, and adds the final score to pre-printed ribbon labels and then attaches the label to the correct ribbon, then to diver sheet.
Requirements: This position requires no prior experience.
Time commitment: Home meets for the duration of meet.
Judge
This gives you the best seat in the house! Judges watch each dive and give a corresponding score. on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest) in gradations of ½ point according to the NVSL standards.
There are 5 judges at each meet. The high and low score are tossed out and the middle 3 are used for the final score. To be a judge, you need to attend a NVSL training session. As a new Judge, you will start with our Developmental Meets and Instrasquad meets. Once you feel comfortable, you will be able to judge a Dual Meet. It’s a great way to learn the sport and support your kids!
Requirements: NVSL training required. One season of developmental meets judging (and as much Dual Meets "shadowing" as possible) before judging a Dual Meet.
Time commitment: Duration of meet.
Referee
The Referee (an NVSL-certified official) is the chief official for each meet. His/her principal function is to ensure that the meet is properly conducted within the NVSL rules and that divers have uniformly fair competitive conditions. The Referee serves as the final authority on the interpretation and enforcement of all diving rules.
The referee can serve as a judge and must be positioned on the pool deck during meets as close as practicable to the judges. Must be familiar with the current NVSL Handbook as well as the USA Diving Rules and Regulations. The Referee signals the diver when he/she is allowed to start the dive.
Requirements: Must have volunteered as a judge for at least 1 year before being eligible to volunteer as a referee. Must become an NVSL Certified Referee (attend clinic and pass certification exam).
Time commitment: Home meets for the duration of meet.
Data Entry Coordinator
The Data Entry Coordinator reviews all the score sheets generated during the meet and enters into the NVSL online system. This must be done as the meet takes place. At the end of the meet, the Data Entry Coordinator submits the information to be approved by NVSL's Division Coordinator.
Track personal bests throughout the season and updates the PB tracker and prepares ribbons (dual and developmental meets, personal bests, pool records) and hands them to the coaches for distribution at PR & Recognition Donut Friday.
Requirements: As of now, only Reps can do this job.
Time commitment: Home meets for the duration of meet.

Order food for the home meets to be sold by the snack bar staff (submit receipts for reimbursement to the general OSRC fund). Let Team Reps know (1 week in advance) what food will be sold so they can announce it in the weekly email to the visiting team.
Requirements: Good organizational skills, one year as an Otter Diver parent.
Time commitment: duration of the meet.
Popsicles Distribution
Bring at least 65 popsicles to a home dual meet in a cooler and have it with you on the pool deck for distribution to divers after each age group event concludes throughout the meet. Traditionally popsicles are offered to divers from both teams. These may NOT be given to the snack shack for distribution.
Requirements: great role for new parents.
Time commitment: duration of the meet.
Team Rep
The team rep(s) coordinates with NVSL to stay abreast of any new rules and regulations each year, identifies a strong coaching team, develops practice schedules, liaises with the pool operator to communicate scheduling changes or delays, and serves as a conduit between coaches and parents. The Team Rep is available on-deck at all meets, checks the meet sheets for the opposing team against NVSL difficulty rating for the current year and is the person focused on making sure meets run smoothly meets and the season is fun!

Undercover Otter Coordinator
Work with the Team Reps to determine the best week for secret otters. Email divers to see who would like to participate and distribute forms for Secret Otters. Randomly assign Secret Otters, email Secret Otter assignments, determine a theme for each day, and arrange a place for people to drop off and pick up their gifts (usually designating a table with a sign in the Social Room).
Senior Recognition Night & Senior Gifts
Order Otter gifts for graduating seniors and prepare to present the gifts at the banquet after the reading of previously collected bios. Collect photos and favorite memories from the senior and their family and team members to make posters to be hung for "Senior Night."
Season-end Slide Show
This is a favorite tradition at the Banquet where the team will sit poolside gathered around a projector and slide show presentation of the season in photos! Put the best soundtracks next to amazing pics of diving, social, teamwork, and fun and let your creativity flow! Using photos from the team photographers, you'll capture each diver throughout the season (at least one facial view of every diver). Work with Banquet Organizer to ensure that the slide show can be projected (you will need a laptop, projector and any necessary cords).
